The theme that I found throughout the work was the relationship between life and death. The reason that I related to this theme throughout the work was because there were so many pieces that were dark and related to the idea of death and then there were so many that were light and related with the idea that there is always new life. The piece that I related most with the idea of death was, Deconstructing Flight. I thought it really showed how something looks when it is alive and again when its soul has passed. The piece that I related most with the idea of life was current, because it shows the rushing water and the idea that even with the fallen trees there are still things in the forest that are alive. The main idea that I walked away with after looking at these pieces of art was the fact that even when there is death, there is still life to look forward too. Even though the bird was dead and had no more feathers, you can look at the piece across the gallery and be reminded that there is still life.

  2. The theme that was most present in the gallery to me was death. Not only death itself, but the fact that there will always be remains of a living or even non-living thing thing after death, or removal in the case of a non-living thing. Certain artwork in the gallery incorporated bones, which made myself think about this concept even more. I also thought some of the artwork gave insight into the details life gives us. A couple of the gallery items showed detail of the night sky, and the picture it paints for us such as constellations and stars. Jenna

A common theme that I believed surrounded the “The Look of Things” was that of structure. I found structure to be a common theme because I believe the structure of the animal’s bones represented the lives they once held. Even though life had since left what was represented by the bone structures, what remained still represented the life that was had from the animals built around the bone structures. The displays of the bones brought life back into the structure and represented the life that was had in the animals. I felt the artwork allowed the individual to think of what the animal’s life was like. Even though bones usually represent death, the art displayed the bone’s lives.

Several things crossed my mind as I deeply thought about the artwork in the gallery. After reading The Look of Things and viewing all of the skeletons throughout the gallery, I began thinking of how intricate yet everlasting life can be. Despite what happens, our remains and belongings may still hover on earth. Although it is normal for humans to be buried, it is possible for the ashes to be kept in a special place or spread amongst the precious earth. It is also common for our belongings to remain on earth, this can be our personal artifacts or things we created. This is shown by the picture that was created by Holly’s husband, Restricted Area. Nobody would have thought that this piece of art would have such strong meaning in such a beautiful gallery when it was created.

Life will forever be here despite what happens. Some people may not know which belongings are ours and who’s ashes are who’s but we are still here. Those who are your closest will remember where you are and what special things were yours. The skeleton of a fox our mouse may remain unknown, but we do know that their remains still exist here on earth.

A common theme that I identified in the pieces of art in the gallery was that of the cycle of the earth. The piece that I chose to write about is entitled Paths that cross. This piece features a small acrylic painting of a skyscape with a brown landscape and a pile of rock and shells next to it. This piece represents the cycle of the earth in that the pile of rock and shells shows how the earth breaks down what it creates and then that will be used to eventually make something new. The rock and shells could represent death in a sense and the portrait portion of this piece with the blue sky represents life and the variations of color that are present in nature. The blue background that the painting and pile of rock and shells sits upon represents the earth.

  7. The theme that I found most interesting in this exhibition was the representation of new (birth) versus old (death). After reading the wall biography and discovering that one of the artists was a grieving widow I understood the meaning in a much deeper sense. Feeling weighted down by the loss of her deceased lover and unable to find comfort she became preoccupied with death. The other artist helped her through this dark time by showing her that death is not the end. This is shown through the art that signifies new. The one that caught my attention the most was Martha Glowacki’s piece “The Look of Things” because the bones expressed the cold and negative aspect of death. However, I couldn’t help but feel the presence of hope after reading the poem. That even after death, change continues to take place. This is inevitable and we must learn to embrace it or end up living in deep despair. Death is not necessarily bad; it is beautiful in many ways.

  8. All the pieces seemed to say something about the cycle of the earth, from the very beginning of time. There was a prehistoric feel to the pieces, and even though the modern bird bones were exhibited, they were in the way that prehistoric animals are in a museum. There was a lot of earth, water, and clouds. These were sometimes represented in front of outer space space like images. The piece, “The look of things” had an inscription wreathed with white bird bones. The words said something to effect that the bones no longer resemble what they once were. This leads me to the feel as thought the cycles of the earth were being represented. Everything is comes from the same substances. It continues to grow, then die, and break down. Different things come from the same materials. Jenny
